Inside Second Impact Syndrome Second Impact SyndromeOwing perhaps to injury mechanisms described above, second brain injuries occurring during the recovery phase of prior injuries can be injurious to a magnitude greater than that which would otherwise be expected. The so called "second impact syndrome" should be sufficient reason, for example, to sideline players of contact sports until they are free of symptoms. In many reported cases, relatively trivial second injury has resulted in brain herniation and death.
