Flare-Ups (Exacerbations) During Recovery

Are Flare-Ups Common during Course of Treatment?

It is fairly common, if not expected, for one symptomatic flare-up to occur during the time you are under care. Typically, it occurs about 2 to 4 weeks after injury, when your pain is starting to subside and you overdo some activity at home or at work. These flare-ups will usually require two to eight additional office visits over 2 weeks or so. You should use ice during these flare-ups at home for 15-20 minutes several times per day at least one hour apart. The risk of exacerbations may be reduced if we take the time to discuss your activities of daily living early in your treatment plan. Unfortunately, the need to resume active treatment for more than one flare-up of pain indicates poorer prognosis potential, so it is extremely important to follow our advice and instructions.
